Bebbington has finals date ay Ayr
BERWICKSHIRE bowlers shone in the Borders qualifying round for the Scottish Bowling Association finals in Ayr.
Ayton fours and Coldstream senior fours will both represent the Borders in August at the finals, along with Stuart Bebbington of Tweedmouth.
A close defeat for Coldstream's triples denied the club another team in the Scottish finals.
Paul Wilson, Ian Patterson, Mark Robertson and Robert Kerr of Ayton took on Ralph Nicholson, David Miller Snr, David Miller Jnr and Robert Crawford of Waverley and the Ayton four had a very good start scoring 9 shots in the first four ends without reply.
Waverley then gained 5 shots in three ends but then dropped a count of 4 to be 13 shots to 5 down. Two counts of 3 in the space of three ends helped Waverley to reduce the gap to just 4 shots with six ends left to play. Four ends later the gap was still 4 shots however a count of 3 for Ayton on the penultimate end really finished any hope of a comeback and the match finished at 20 shots to 14 in favour of Ayton.
In the junior singles Stuart Bebbington of Tweedmouth was bidding for yet another visit to the finals and his opponent was Andrew Hancock of Abbotsford who had previously qualified for Ayr in the triples category.
Bebbington settled very quickly and soon built up a 7 shots to nil lead. Hancock then had his first scoring end with a full house of 4 and followed this with a single to be just 2 shots adrift. Bebbington hit back straight away with a count of 2 immediately followed by his own count of 4 moving on quickly to lead by 15 shots to 6. Things now looked very difficult for Hancock, however, he fought back reducing the deficit to just 4 shots. This success was shortlived and 4 shots in two ends put Bebbington within 2 shots of victory. Hancock did take to next end but on the following end Bebbington finished the match.
Further success for Berwickshire bowlers came in the senior fours as Norrie Erskine, Max Lowe, Robert Hamilton and Alan Mitchell of Coldstream defeated George Campbell, Eric Miller, Doug Currie and Mike Kerr representing St Ronans. The Coldstream four took an early 8-0 lead after two ends, and held on to completed a 19-12 victory.
However, Coldstream triple of Jim Hope, Wattie Johnston and Michael Clark were edged out 14-12 by Hawick's Ewan McGregor, Les Clarkson and Kenny Johnstone.
