A TEAM of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) officers were in Berwick last Thursday looking for motorists using red diesel.
The team challenged over 80 vehicles and caught one motorist illegally using red diesel in their tank. The individual caught is a repeat offender of the crime, and HMRC are looking at taking further action, and are currently looking into the case.
An HMRC spokesperson said: "With a price difference of around 65p a litre, red diesel is an attractive proposition for motorists, but that price difference is there for a reason. Those who continue to use rebated fuel illegally are abusing a tax system that is there to support and reduce the burden on our industries such as agriculture.
"It isn't about cheating the Government out of a few pounds - with £350m lost to illicit diesel in the UK annually, it's about cheating themselves and their neighbours out of vital funding for public services.
"Increasingly motorists are opting for legitimate white diesel for road vehicles and we would ask them not to be complacent, and work with us to identify illegal activity.
"However our message to those who wilfully persist in using red diesel unlawfully is a simple one - anyone is liable to be stopped and tested, the chances of getting caught are now greater then ever.
"The public and retailers have responded very positively to our efforts and we have seen fewer vehicles pulling up to the red diesel pumps this week, than we have in the past. It was encouraging to find that many of the motorists whose vehicles we tested were aware of our recent efforts to tackle the illegal use of red diesel, and were taking heed of our message, as evidenced by the low number of positive test results. However some customers were taken by surprise to be challenged on a forecourt."
HMRC is committed to tackling the illicit fuel trade at all points of the supply chain, from smuggling and laundering through to storage, distribution and eventual use.
HMRC is always keen to speak to members of the public who have information that could help stamp out the illegal fuel trade. Anyone who knows of fuel misuse or suspicious activities should contact the HMRC confidential hotline by email at customs.confidential@ hmrc.gsi.gov.uk in writing to Freepost Customs Confidential, Freepost SEA 939, PO 100, Gravesend, Kent, DA12 2BR or by phone on (0800) 595000.
