Gymnasium hosts urban art exhibition
BERWICK Gymnasium Gallery's latest exhibition, which forms part of the Fellowship programme, opens on Saturday, July 5.
Marek Pisarsky and Anne Peschken have been working collaboratively under the name of Urban Art since 1988.
They were awarded this year's Berwick Gymnasium International Fellowship and Elevated Pastoral is the result of their stay in the town. It looks at the pending dangers of climate change and its overpowering threat to humankind.
They said: "We visited many of the places J M W Turner depicted 150 years earlier and have since been transformed into cliches of Englishness.
"We walked the northern part of the Pennine Way and other well marked trails and footpaths. We got a lot of healthy fresh air and some stunning views of barren hills, steep cliffs, beautiful sunsets and romantic castles.
"We decided to use these experiences and our thoughts about the implications of landscape painting today as material for the pixel painting and the video equipped exercise machines."
The Berwick Gymnasium Fellowships are offered annually to professional artists who have the opportunity to stay in the town for a prolonged period of time to develop their work.
